Are Your Security Cameras On?
You might be surprised by the answer
It’s easy to put security cameras up and forget about them. Most feeds aren’t exactly entertaining to watch, so in many cases, they aren’t. The assumption is that video will be there if it’s needed. But many things can go wrong with your cameras when you aren’t watching. In fact, in 2024, 62% of our clients’ cameras weren’t capturing video before we arrived. That’s why we are now offering a free camera inspection: to help our clients rest easily, knowing they’ll have the video if and when they need it.
ANALYSIS
This year, we were called multiple times for cameras that had failed to capture incidents. There were several reasons for that. As noted above, for clients with previously-installed cameras, 62% of them were not recording when arrived. 47% of them were offline entirely. Some had failed due to low-quality hardware, some had broken cabling, and some had been intentionally destroyed by bad actors. Another 15% of the cameras we saw connected to DVRs or NVRs that were not recording due to being full, turned off, or incorrectly configured.
Even among the 38% of cameras that were working and recording, several had dirty lenses and a few others had been blocked by vegetation growth since they had been installed.
Some had failed over time and just never been fixed. Others had been assumed to be functioning correctly. No matter the case, clients were left in the dark after something happened and they needed the video.
It would have been better to know ahead of time that the cameras were failing, so that they could have had the option to fix them ahead of time or work repairs into a budget in the future. But with service call and trip fees, it doesn’t always make sense to call a security company out just to take a look. This is doubly true if it seems like everything is working.
